Committees

No matter what skills, interests, and talents you have, there is a place for your gifts! There are PLENTY of activities in each of these committees to help you serve as the hands and feet of Christ every day of the month!

Decorated Cupcakes

Bake sale

This committee currently does not have a chairman, although it does have a co-chair: Mary Canales. The

Super Bowl Sunday weekend bake sale is always a big fundraiser and a very supported event for the Catholic

Daughters! Currently the Regent will chair this project unless we have someone else step up. I would love for one of our old-time members to take this on along with one of our new members. Please consider and pray about this committee.

Bingo Food SERVICE

As an ongoing fundraiser, CDA provides a concessions team that works the 3rd Monday of the month at Bingo at the KC Hall in Alvin. We have 14 CDA concession teams, and each team typically works once a year. Most of the teams set their own menus, however the prices are set between all the teams. The most popular items are chicken salad, turkey and cheese, and ham and cheese. They also enjoy egg salad or special items like BBQ sandwiches or soup during winter. Additionally, we serve nachos, Frito pies, apple pie, and chocolate cake. Contact Kayse to be added to a team for either donating food or serving at the event.

Blood Drive

There are currently no committee members, and we are in desperate need of help. We always feed the workers, and oftentimes we need meals for those doing the blood donation from the blood bank. The blood drive provides whole or red blood cells, which can be broken up and used for many people in need. We also need donors! Those with Type O blood are especially needed because their blood type is that of the Universal Donor.

Women's game night

The past two years CDA hosted a game night and fundraiser bash while playing Bunco, and we had a ton of fun!

Calling Comm.

The Calling Committee is in charge of calling members who do not have email to remind them of upcoming meetings. On occasion, we have the need to contact all (or most) of the membership to notify them of an item, special event, urgent voting matter, or to request their help. The only requirement is that you have a phone and a willingness to talk!

Care committee

The Care Committee was set up to visit CDA ladies who are homebound either of age or due to health. With member's or family's permission, we have gone to members' homes to celebrate their birthdays, which includes cake, card, a balloon, and punch. Our goal is to have a buddy for each of the ladies to call and check up on them periodically or go visit them as much as each buddy would like. A buddy can provide a needed meal, pick up their groceries, or just go and sit with them. We just want our homebound sisters to feel our sisterhood of CDA love for them and for them to know that we truly CARE for each of them. We have 14 members on our Care Committee, and we'd welcome you to join us!

Ceremonials

The Ceremonials Committee is meant to ensure that our Court follows correct procedures for membership receptions, installation of new members and officers, and the Rose Ceremony at Masses for deceased members. It is important to have a core group of about 6 members who are familiar with the procedures for our ceremonials and are able to assist as needed. If you are interested in joining, please contact Donna.

Floral Card

Cheer Committee

The Cheer Committee Chairperson sends out cards to CDA members for milestone birthdays, wedding anniversaries, illnesses, condolences, and congratulations on special accomplishments like personal graduations, promotions, retirement or becoming a grandparent. If you are aware of any member who needs a CHEER card, please contact the committee chair.

If you have any of these types of cards you are not utilizing, we will gladly accept them.

communications

The Communications Committee is for publicity on our Facebook page and in local publications. Chairperson Kelly Johnston is excited to be taking on the publicity for the Court to share all the good things that we do together. If you have an event that you would like to see in the local newspaper or the Facebook page, please contact her.

Decorations

The Decorating Committee sets up the tables, chairs, table cloths, and decorations before each CDA meeting. We also decorate for special CDA functions. This committee is chaired by Maggie Sepulveda, Yolanda Falcon, and her daughter. We can always use assistance with setting up and taking down the tables and chairs and putting up all the Court supplies back in our closet. We'd welcome volunteers to assist, as many hands make light work!

Donations

We meet once a year and look at all the requested or suggested outside charitable foundations or organizations that our Court has given to us. We look at all the requests and decide which organizations to donate to and how much they will receive. Please consider joining the committee, as we need three more, and be thinking about charities or organizations you might like to request or suggest we make a donation to.

Fill the Bowl ministry

Jesus said, "Feed my sheep," and that is exactly what you do when you participate in our "Fill the Bowl" ecumenical partnership with Grace Episcopal Church. Each of the past two years, members from our CDA court have donated upwards of 10,000 meals(!) to feed the homeless and the food-poor of Alvin. Do you have three extra servings leftover from a meal? 30 extra servings leftover from an event? Do you wish to simply make chili for 20? All of these are ways to contribute to the Fill the Bowl Ministry. Thanks to a grant received from Soroptimist International of Alvin and from our standing rules, we have containers to provide for you! What can you do to show your love for Jesus? Are you being called to "feed My sheep"? Contact Jeannette Reed to be added to the GroupMe group for updates, shared information, and meal tracking (to help us when requesting grants).

Denim & Diamonds dinner-dance

Our Annual Denim & Diamonds dinner dance is our biggest annual fundraising event!
Each year we have raised thousands of dollars while having a blast and enjoying a wonderful meal and good music.
Our goal is to have a successful fundraiser while utilizing the individual strengths of each of our CDA sisters.

The committee members work for several months prior to the event to organize the silent auction, live raffle, catering specifics, games, live band and/or DJ, decorations, and ticket sales.

This is a BIG event and a chance to reach out to many friends outside of CDA to share in our mission of Unity & Charity!

*NEW* Historian committee

We are especially interested in discovering and sharing our Court's legacy. We are eager to involve "younger" CDA sisters who are interested in joining this endeavor. When we celebrated our Court's 5O-year anniversary celebration in 2023, Frances began a "then and now" Powerpoint of our first 50 years. It is still a "work in progress" which will be finished and become a cornerstone of our history. Other goals include posting the history on our website and expanding it to include other aspects to be identified that members would like to be a part of the history.

Buffet Table

Hospitality committee

This committee is responsible for making sure we have volunteers signed up to bring food & refreshments to the monthly meetings. Our Court meets from September through November and from January through June.

A sign-up sheet will be available at the entrance table at each meeting.

A week or so before each meeting, our committee will text/email to those that signed up a reminder on what they are signed up to bring.

*NEW* JCDA Junior Catholic Daughters

Our court welcomed JCDA Court 2073 at its installation Mass on April 6, 2025, with 30 charter members. Girls ages 5-18 are welcome to join! The JCDA will help the girls come together in ways they didn't think could happen, and leadership skills can help them in the future. At the state convention we learned about all the positive impacts the JCDA can have in a community. We are excited about all the different things they can help with in the parish.

Ideas like Adopt-a-Grandparent, Vocation Spotlight, Overnight Retreat, and bake sales are just a start.

Member CDA Supplies

New member and chairman Lou Santiago is in charge of ordering CDA supplies as requested from members. The process is that when a member places an order with payment, she will hold it until at least three orders come in to reduce the cost of shipping. She will bring a binder to each meeting so that members may look at the merchandise options and decide if they wish to purchase an item. This includes ribbons, shirts, bags, etc. You may place an order by filling out an order form at the meeting.

Membership Committee

The primary role of the committee is to ensure our Court continues to increase our membership while at the same time retaining our current members. This will be accomplished via membership drives as well as by improving and streamlining the current tools and processes we use to partner with potential members and keep in contact with them from the time of interest until they join or decide not to join. We hold informational meetings for new members in a relaxed setting where they can ask questions and not feel intimidated. This also includes handling CDA Bios for inclusion in our Court Newsletters.

Mass Cards

SEEKING CHAIRPERSON

Let’s take the time to pray for our deceased brothers and sisters through honoring them by name in the Sacrifice of the Mass, one of the greatest forms of public prayer. If you would like to enroll a friend or family member, it is an easy process of enrollment. A small donation of $3 is requested per individual, and the person is remembered by name at the First Friday Mass each month for ONE YEAR. You may also use this form of prayer of Mass enrollment for other occasions including birthdays, anniversaries, thinking of you, etc. for those that are still living! Money collected goes toward student scholarships. Let’s storm Heaven as the church militant on behalf of those on purgatory!

Newsletter

The newsletter is published every other month. As you complete activities, please write a small article about it, include pictures if you have them, and email them to CDA2073newsletter@gmail.com. You do not have to wait for the deadline to send these articles in. However, deadlines are typically the last day of the month. This gives me time to put it together, Mary Montague to proofread and edit, Lela to then review and print.

*NEW* Patriotism & Legislation

Our Court is beginning a new committee for Patriotism and Legislation. We are supporting PATRIOTISM!!! Our committee stays abreast of current bills, laws, and other events that our government is trying to enact or host. We want our CDA sisters to be informed and knowledgable about these issues in government so we can stand firm in our faith and morals, and we can vote according to a well formed conscience. This will impact the world we leave to our children and grandchildren.

We will need at least three ladies to answer the call to this committee.

PLAT: Promoting literacy across texas

For Promoting Literacy Across Texas, we read to preschoolers and toddlers, usually in March, around Dr. Seuss' birthday. We read books according to their age and need 3 or 4 more volunteers to help with this endeavor.

We also take part in

Read Across America and

Dia de los Niños (International Children's Day) during the months of March and April. We need volunteers to read and possibly donate books for these events.

Respect Life

The Respect Life Committee encompasses many projects from Conception to Natural Death:

  • The Baby Bottle Campaign

  • The Baby Shower

  • October - Pro-Life Month

  • WRAP (White Ribbon Against Pornography)

  • The Giving Tree

  • The Life Chain

These are just a few of the activities that we do within Catholic Daughters to support life. I would love for some of you to maybe consider taking over one or more of these Respect Life projects. If you feel called to help in any way with any of the above - please reach out to me.

Scholarships

Our Court awards two types of scholarships: one for Catholic graduating high school seniors and one for students enrolled in a Catholic school or Catholic homeschooling program. The applications for our local scholarships will be made available at the February CDA meeting as well as to all CDA members via email. The church office at St. John's will also have copies. We also provide applications for the national scholarships. The deadline for submitting applications for our local scholarships will be in early April. The committee will meet to review the applications and select recipient(s) within a couple weeks of the deadline. The exact date/time will be decided when it gets closer.

The Scholarship Committee needs to add AT LEAST 2 new members.

Scrapbook

The Scrapbook Committee gets to use their creativity to preserve our Court's long history and to beautifully display photos from events throughout the years. The scrapbooks we make show both current and prospective members more of what CDA is about and the impact we have on our Church and our community. Currently, there are about 6 members in the committee; however, everyone is welcome to attend. The meetings are held 1st Thursday of Month at 5:30 p.m.

Graduation Cap Cookies

Senior breakfast

In May, CDA honors the high school graduating senior parishioners at one of the 9:00 Sunday Masses. After the Mass, we sponsor a celebratory breakfast. Our goal is to serve the students and collect some nice door prizes to give away at the breakfast celebration meal.

These meals typically honor 2-3 dozen students and feed both them and their families.

*NEW* Social committee

"A happy heart makes the face cheerful" (Proverbs 15:13). The CDA Social Committee will be a group of women from the Court who come together to build community through fun social activities. As the chairperson, I am seeking volunteers to serve on this committee. The volunteers would meet, setting a goal to plan 2 to 3 activities for the CDA year. I am asking for creative and entertaining ideas for this committee to use. Please pray and consider joining me for this F-U-N committee!

Spirituality committee

The CDA Court 2073 Spirituality Committee helps to guide our sisters into a closer relationship with Christ, to better understand our calling to love and serve Our Lord and our neighbor, and to find peace and joy in working together. This is done through prayers and devotionals shared both at meetings and outside of meetings, sharing information about our faith and news in the Church, and organizing events in the fall of each year. We alternate annually between a fall women's retreat and bringing in a notable guest speaker. Committee members help plan the retreat every two years and help coordinate the speaker's events on the alternate years.

*NEW* Vocation support

We hope to do some exciting ventures with the Office of Vocations at the Diocese. We are reaching out to find out details about adopting a seminarian as well as goodie bags for seminarians as they start back after the summer. Since this is a new committee, we are open to fresh ideas, and anyone interested; we would love for you to lock arms with us. This program's goal is to promote vocations in our parish. More information to follow.

Website

*NEW* Website committee

We are starting up a committee for creating and maintaining a website for our local CDA Court # 2073. If you have any experience with web design or website maintenance, consider joining to add your talents by contacting the committee chair.
